McAlpine House, Broome, Western Australia
Historic and traditional McAlpine House is a quiet, luxurious and graceful boutique guesthouse situated in the centre of Old Broome within a short walk of shops, restaurants, galleries, museums and other attractions. The beautifully renovated two-storey bungalow complex is surrounded by a lush tropical garden which can be enjoyed while relaxing on wide timber verandahs.
Formerly the family home of a pearling master and then the country residence of Lord Alistair McAlpine, it offers a choice of excellent accommodation in six air-conditioned double rooms. These include an executive suite, two en suite rooms and three verandah rooms with shared facilities. All are tastefully and beautifully furnished with imported Javanese pieces and full home-from-home comforts from television, video and direct dial telephone to refrigerator, ceiling fan, tea and coffee tray.
There are no restaurant facilities but owner Marilynne Paspaley and host Liz Leigh are happy to arrange for a dinner to be served around the outdoor swimming pool or for a gourmet hamper for a picnic at nearby Cable Beach. Kitchen and barbecue are available for the guests use. A tropical breakfast is served in the attractive dining room.
It has all the homely charm of a bed and breakfast and the sophistication of a resort, but neither description quite fits. And that's its appeal - there's nothing else like it.
