Submarine Base Resort Hotel is situated on the northernmost tip of the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea.
It is 10 minutes drive from Rabaul, which was the scene of two dramatic volcanic eruptions in 1994. Rabaul is rich in history having been the Japanese headquarters for the South Pacific during World War II (1942 - 1945), and Submarine Base itself is of great interest historically.
Tavui Point, which overlooks the Submarine Base was a large Japanese wartime gun emplacement, and a system of tunnels and shafts in the cliffs leads down to tunnels and caverns at the waters edge. It was a safe haven for Japanese submarines to surface and dock
There are no submarines at Submarine Base now, but within 5 minutes by boat there are two excellent World War II relics on which to dive.
